Where to Stay for Savannah's Christmas Market

If there are four of you and you want to walk home from the market, look at the dog-friendly duplex near food and fun in the downtown historic district, or its smaller downstairs apartment. If there are six to eight of you and you're happy to drive or split a ride, the houses out toward Wilmington Island give you far more square footage for the money, and in December the trade is mostly about parking and bedtime, not beach weather. Rates move around at the holidays, so the number you see for your exact dates is the only number that counts. What follows is how to pick before you look at them.
The market itself, and why your address matters less than you think
The Savannah Christmas Market sets up at Plant Riverside District, the far west end of River Street, in the converted power plant complex. It runs daily from late November into early January, eleven in the morning until nine at night, and it's free to walk in. Some stalls close on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Here's the part that decides your rental: in December, Savannah's city parking garages are free from noon until eight in the evening. The Plant Riverside garage sits right at the market with just under five hundred spaces, open around the clock, though it won't take oversized vehicles. Street parking north of Liberty Street is free after eight, and south of Liberty after five. So a group staying ten minutes out of downtown isn't paying a penalty to come in for the evening, which flips the usual calculation. Walkability is lovely. It isn't worth two extra bedrooms.
Worth knowing for the rest of the trip: Forsyth Park is about a mile south of River Street, roughly a twenty-minute walk down Bull Street through Johnson, Wright, Chippewa, Madison and Monterey squares, and the lots at Forsyth are free with a ninety-minute limit. The December Nights and Holiday Lights run at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens on selected evenings from the end of November to Christmas Eve, and the Holiday Tour of Homes gets you inside the houses you've been admiring from the sidewalk.
Four of you, downtown, dog included
The renovated duplex on Waldburg is four bedrooms and four bathrooms across both units, which is more house than a foursome needs, so the useful version for a small group is the ground-floor apartment: two bedrooms with queen beds, two bathrooms, a kitchen with granite counters and enough gear to cook a proper dinner, and a hand-painted mural in the living room by a local artist. There's a Kroger two blocks away, which matters more in December than it sounds, because the one thing a holiday weekend in Savannah will do is make you want a quiet night in.
It's dog friendly, there's a fire pit and grill in the shared yard, and entry is by smart lock with a code generated for your stay. One off-street space comes with it and the street parking around it is free, with the street-sweeping schedule the only thing to watch. Four steps and a handrail up to the front porch.
If you want the whole building, the downtown estate for twelve across two units and the estate duplex with carriage house are both a short walk or a quick ride from everything, and both are built for a group that wants its own front doors but one dinner table.
Six or eight, and the case for driving in
Out on the islands between downtown and Tybee, the math changes. The newly renovated house on Sheftall gives four bedrooms, each with a deep memory-foam mattress, a dining room that seats six with a breakfast nook for four more, a fully fenced yard and off-street parking for three cars. It's about fifteen minutes to downtown and fifteen the other way to Tybee. For a group that plans to cook one big meal and spread out the rest of the time, this is the house to beat.
The coastal home on Bradford is the same geography with a different personality: four bedrooms, three and a half baths, pet friendly, and built for the kind of group that treats the house as the event rather than a place to sleep between outings.
Then there's the marsh house with the spa, ten minutes from downtown and fifteen from North Tybee, on more than an acre shared only with the two Airstreams on the same land. The master has a private screened balcony looking out over the marsh, and there's a gazebo and a spa for the evening. In December that balcony is a sweater-and-coffee proposition rather than a lounging one, which is not a drawback: cold mornings on a Georgia marsh are the best ones.
If you want the odd one
Some groups book Savannah for the house as much as the city. Two options here earn it. The large home with the modern Airstream sits on a quiet acre, roughly ten minutes from downtown and fifteen from Tybee: five bedrooms, nine beds, three full baths, a den for the evening, a master suite and a guest king room on the ground floor, three bedrooms upstairs, and the Airstream parked outside sleeping two to four. For a small group it's more space than you need, but the camper is the thing people remember.
The property with two Airstreams and the four-bedroom house sits on nearly two private acres, fifteen minutes from Tybee Beach and ten from downtown, with Wilmington Island's food and bars a three-minute drive away. Both of these are sized for bigger parties, so for four or six they're a splurge rather than a fit. Say so to yourself before you fall for the photos.
A quick way to narrow it down
- Walking home from the market matters most: the downtown apartment or duplex on Waldburg, or one of the two downtown estates if you want the whole building.
- Space and a kitchen matter most: the house on Sheftall, the home on Bradford, or the marsh house with the spa, all roughly ten to fifteen minutes from the historic district.
- You're bringing a dog: the downtown apartment has a fenced yard; the Sheftall house has a fully fenced one and room for three cars.
- You want one night out at Tybee: anything on the island side. From downtown it's about eighteen miles and most of a half hour, longer when there's an event on.
Every one of these has a full kitchen, heating, a washer and dryer, and wifi. In a December rental the laundry is the amenity you'll actually use, because the squares are damp and the market is outdoors.
What $150 to $250 a night buys here
Nightly rates across these homes range widely, and holiday dates sit higher than a random Tuesday in February. A two-bedroom apartment for four is more likely to land in your range than a four-bedroom house for eight, but a four-bedroom house split among six people often works out cheaper per head than two hotel rooms, and you get a kitchen and a dining table out of it. Pull your exact dates up on each listing: that's where the nightly rate, the cleaning and tax lines, and any minimum stay for the holiday period show up together, and over the Christmas Market weeks minimum stays are common across Savannah.
One caution on a home you'll see while browsing. The Carriage House at Forsyth looks perfect for two or three people, part of a 1906 mansion with a private patio behind twelve-foot walls, garage parking, and the free DOT trolley picking up a block away. It takes monthly stays only. For a long weekend at the market, it isn't an option, however good it looks.
Booking it
Stay Here manages short-term homes across Savannah and Tybee Island, from downtown apartments to island houses and a couple of Airstreams on private land. Booking direct through the site is how you see live December availability, the full cost for your nights, and the stay rules for each home before you commit. Direct bookings carry a 10% saving.
If you're torn between two, send us the dates and the headcount. Picking between a downtown apartment and an island house is really a question about whether your group wants to walk home or cook breakfast, and that's a faster conversation than a comparison table.
